Matthew Barrow's story...

Mathew Barrow is a trustee of Hull University Union(HUU). HUU provides representation, support and a social environment for the 22,000 plus students at the University of Hull. Matthew ran for the position of Vice President Education, a joint sabbatical and trustee role.

He says: "I wanted to get more involved within the Students Union and make a difference to the 22,000 members we have. It is one of the leading Students Unions in the country.

I am responsible for a budget of £55,000. I ensure that this is monitored against expenditure as well as the overall budget of the organisation. I also ensure that all of our operations are legal and within the overall aims and objectives of the organisation. My specialist areas are around education and representation.

What I like is the buffets, well no, really it's a great way to get more involved in doing something you love. You get to meet some very interesting people and also for me it's been a great learning experience.

I've learnt that organisations need to be focussed and centred around their values and their objectives. What might seem a great idea, might not be relevant to the mission or objectives of the charities aims.

My message to people about trusteeship is do it! It's not very time consuming and it's a great way to get involved.
