Fayaz Malik is a trustee of Halow (Birmingham), a charity that runs visitors’ centres at four prisons to help families of prisoners maintain good family ties. Fayez became a trustee of the charity through Reach volunteering, one of the Trustees’ Week partners.
Fayaz says: “The word “trusteeship” says it all – our service users trust in us to shape the charity to deliver the services that make a difference to their lives.
“As a professional with experience of the not-for-profit sector, becoming a trustee of Halow was an ideal way for me to make a contribution with a big impact. My main duties are to make sure the charity is well governed and financially viable but the best thing about being a trustee is the difference we make to the people we serve and the staff we employ, especially in such a challenging environment.
“I think Trustees’ Week is an exemplary campaign – we need to do more to encourage the capable citizens of this country to contribute to the well being of fellow citizens.”
Bridget Cameron, Vice-Chair of Halow said of Fayaz’s appointment: “A strong management board is essential to help us to work successfully in this complex and challenging environment. Since Fayaz joined the board, he’s shown a wonderful mixture of commitment, knowledge and ideas.
“His financial and human resources skills are invaluable for us and Fayaz is very flexible about taking on different tasks. He’s helped guide our management committee in difficult decisions about staffing and procedures. Fayaz is also a true people person and communicates extremely well with colleagues and users of our services. He is a valuable member of our board.”
